Careless handling of sewage resulted in soil contamination in Bugulma district. Court ordered violators to eliminate consequences in a 6-month period

11 October 2017, Wednesday

The pit filled with sewage in the Podgorny settlement of the Bugulma district was found by environmentalists in July this year. Untreated effluents flowed from the local sewage system. Wear of sewerage treatment facilities and total absence of preventive measures by the local authorities led to the destruction of protected lands. According to the estimates of the inspectors of the South-Eastern Territorial Administration of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, 1,200 sq.m. of soil was destructed. In the selected samples, the specialists of the SIAC established a 29-fold excess of ammonium content. Based on materials collected by environmentalists, the Tatar environmental protection interdistrict prosecutor's office prepared and filed a lawsuit in the Bugulma City Court. By a decision of the Court, the claim has been satisfied. The executive committees of the Bugulma Municipal District and the Podgorny Rural Settlement are required to organize wastewater disposal which would exclude discharges into the terrain. The disturbed lands must be reclaimed in a 6-month period.
