The monitoring agency NewsEffector together with the Fund of regional studies "Russian Regions" carried out a study of "The Index of happiness in the Russian cities".  The study aimed at compilation of the conventional index of happiness to find out where the most happy Russian people live.

A total of 26,900 people from 100 largest Russian cities participated in the study and answered the following questions: Are you happy with your material well-being? Are you happy with the ecological situation in your city? Do you feel safe in your city? Are you happy with the dynamics of development of your city? Are you happy with the extent of municipal improvement?  Do you feel happy living in your city?

The results of the questionnaire demonstrated that the level of material wealth is important, but at the same time, it is not the determinant factor when it comes to the happiness of Russian people. Such parameters as ecology, safety and the feeling of improving place of living are also important. Grozny, Tyumen, Kazan, Surgut, Krasnodar, Sochi, Nizhnevartovsk, Novorossiysk, and Belgorod were among the TOP cities. Moscow was rated the 52nd, St. Petersburg - the 16th, Yekaterinburg - the 49th, and Novosibirsk - the 13th.
